Project Pinterest: Chevron Pumpkins

I'm linking up with the super hilarious AP today of I Love You More Than Carrots for her Project Pinterest series. The weekly link-up encourage us to not just "pin, pin, pin but do! do! do!". I don't know about you, but I am on Pinterest all. the. time. pinning craft ideas, how-to's, recipe, cute outfits and beauty tips, but I have really never utilized anything but the recipes. In AP's words:

"This link-up was created to change that. Each week I asks that you bake, make, decorate or create just ONE of your pins. Take pictures, write about it, include the Project Pinterest button that you see in my sidebar and return here to link up your post."

So folks, here I am with my very first non-recipe Pinterest inspired project. I've been wanting to recreate the cute and really popular Chevron Pumpkins since last Halloween when they were all over Pinterest. These are the beauties I aspired to create HERE and HERE.

Here is what you'll need:
  • acrylic paint
  • paint brush
  • painter's tape
  • pumpkins
Pretty simple. You'll need newspaper too, unless you want paint all over your kitchen table or counters.

I started by scrubbing my pumpkins with the rough side of a sponge to get rid of any roughness and dirt.

Once they were dry I began tapping. I cut the tape as I went to create a zig-zag design. After I made the first row I just used it as a guide for my next two lines of tape.

After I finished with the taping I began painting. I chose green and yellow paint. The yellow paint was probably not the best choice, as it wasn't as thick as I would have liked it to be. I probably should have just done one color.

I had to do 2-3 coats of the yellow to make it as thick as it is. Thank goodness Owen took a long nap that day. He woke up right when I finished cleaning up the mess I'd made.

I let them dry overnight before removing the tape. I should have done it more carefully and slowly, but I was so excited to see the final product AND I was balancing a certain cutie on my hip. As you can see in the photo below I pulled off some of the paint with the tape as I removed it.

While my pumpkins aren't perfect and I don't quite love the colors now that they're finished, I am proud of them. I think they look very bright and happy by the front door with the mums and other Halloween / Fall decor. I'm also feeling really good about finally doing one of the cool things I've pinned on Pinterest.

Click on over and check out the other Project Pinteresters that have linked up this week and in week's past!

So this week I recreated a craft / decor pin. What should I try next week? Beauty, baking, style, a tip or how-to?
