Love & Marriage: The Story of Us

A group of bloggers, whose blogs I read regularly, are doing a really fun link up all about Love & Marriage. I've enjoyed reading all of their stories and it made me realize that I've never shared how we meet or "our story" here on our blog.

Keith and I started dating in May 2004. Keith was working at the YMCA as a Health and Wellness Director and I was a member at the gym there. We had friends who were friends (my best-friend Nicole and his friend Brian, who are now married with two kids), so I think we had probably been introduced before, but hadn't connected.

To be perfectly honest with all of you I am going to admit that I had my eye on him before he probably even really knew my name. I, of course, thought he was cute and he seemed really kind to the people around him. I'd see him talking with elderly people while they did their workout, interacting with co-workers or talking with kids in a program he was running and he just seemed really kind, which you don't see often enough.

I worked out a lot back then-- a lot might even be a bit of an understatement. I would be at the gym or running on average six days a week. When I was at the gym I would do 60 minutes of cardio before spending another 45 minutes of weights and stretching. Some might say seeing Keith at the gym and talking with him while I worked out was a motivator, and I would have to say they are not entirely incorrect.

Keith awarding me the 1st place trophy for winning the woman's portion of the 5K he organized for the YMCA.

Anyway, I was definitely interested in him for at least a month before he asked me out. I didn't want to be too forward and ask him out, so I just waited for him to bring it up. A guy who spends his spare time at work talking to a girl on an exercise bike has to be at least a little interested, right?
After about a month of getting to know each other during our little visits Keith asked me out. Or, more specifically, asked me to meet him and some friends to hear music at a restaurant. We met at Astaria on a Wednesday night and had a few drinks with a few of our friends and listened to Tony Lindsay sing. Looking back I don't remember feeling very nervous going to meet him. Perhaps since we had already gotten to know each other over the previous months. Or maybe because I just knew I really really liked him and felt like he genuinely liked me.

At the end of the night Keith walked my friends and I out to my car where I was parked. I was going away to San Diego with one of my girlfriends for a few days the next morning and he asked if I would call him when I got back and would I be interested in seeing each other again, this time just us.

I said yes, of course.

He ended up calling me while I was away and I just got major butterflies and couldn't wait to get home. The thing I always say about our relationship is that it has been easy, and drama free--as is not the norm. He never left me waiting for a phone call, wondering if / when we would see each other again, or if he really liked me. He just let his feelings show in his actions--like calling the day after a date and always making plans to do something else fun.

When I returned from my trip we went on our first "real date". We decided to go running together on the trail near my house. After our run Keith asked if I wanted to go to lunch at the Fish Market. We each went our separate ways and got showered and ready and he came back and picked me up. Lunch was great and everything was wonderful....and it still is! I feel like it has all been one big fairytale.

We dated for about four years before getting engaged. In that time Keith worked, started and finished his Masters degree, then began working on his Doctorate and I started working as a Kindergarten teacher.

Right before Keith proposed.
Then on October 18, 2008 we went on a dinner cruise of the San Francisco Bay. Keith had told me we were going with another couple, but then they mysteriously cancelled at the last minute while we were already on our way up to the city. Before dinner we went up to the top deck to enjoy the view of the city. It was so cold and windy. Keith got down on one knee just as we inched closer to the Golden Gate Bridge and asked me to marry him. I obviously said "Yes!"!

We were engaged for over a year and a half before our wedding. In that time we met with our priest to discus pre-martial issues. We also attended a Catholic Engaged Encounter weekend as a part of our Pre-Cana preparation. We took so much home from that weekend and both cherish the experience and the channels of communication it opened for us. We were able to openly and safely discuss our expectations of each other, or marriage and family.

We were married on August 7th 2010 at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Burlingame, California. The day was beautiful and so much fun!

I started this blog right after we were married to chronicle our newlywed life, so if you'd like to stick around for a while you can read all about what we've been up to since we said "I do"!

And we can't forget the most important milestone since we've been married, our son Owen who was born in January 2012.

So that's our story!! Did you share yours? I'd love to read it if you did, so leave a comment letting me know!
