5 on Friday | Favorites from the Week

Good morning and Happy Friday!! I'm linking up this morning with Darci of [the good life], April of A. Liz Adventures, Christina of Carolina Charm, and Natasha of Hello! Happiness for 5 on Friday! I just love this link up and I can't believe it's been a month since I've participated.

I'm going to share some favorites from this week:

ONE - FAVORITE THING I READ: I've been a stay-at-home mom for nearly two years now and I still feel defensive about it. Like I have to explain why I'm not working or why it really is a very important job. You'd think that by now I wouldn't feel like I need to defend our decision for me to stay home, but unfortunately that's not the case. It always comes up. But I found some real solace this week when I read Erica's post about Stay-at-Home Mom Productivity. She says all the things I wish I would have said all the times it's been discussed.
"But we are raising human beings. So someone tell me—tell all of us moms—does it get more productive than that?"

TWO - FAVORITE THING I HEARD: Besides the sound of Owen's laughter or Keith coming through the door at the end of the day, Jack Johnson's new album From Here to Now to You is my favorite thing to listen to right now. It's been playing non-stop in the car and I think it's his best one since... who are we kidding, I like them all! One thing though, who else thinks Radiate sounds a lot like Holes to Heaven?

THREE - FAVORITE THING I WORE: I bought these Julie Skinny Corduroy Pants in Cabernet a few weeks ago, and it is finally cool enough to wear them, so naturally I want to wear them every day. I usually change out of whatever pants I wear out immediately upon returning home. I just like to be comfortable when we're curling up to read books, crawling around with trains or when I'm putting away laundry. But these cords are so comfy that I don't even feel like I want to change out of them. If you know me, that says a lot about them. They're on sale right now online and in store, so I picked them up in Dusty Cinnamon too.

FOUR - FAVORITE THING I MADE: I made a slightly simplified version of this Grilled Seasame-Ginger Chicken Salad twice this week! Once for dinner for Keith and I, and once for lunch with my mom and sister. Keith even said it should become a regular in our weekly dinner rotation! The recipe below includes what I added (with an * next to it) and the things I left out of our salad are crossed out.

Grilled Seasame-Ginger Chicken Salad

Ingredients:
Marinade and Dressing
1/4 cup soy sauce
3 Tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
1/4 cup canola oil
2 Tbsp hoisin sauce
1 Tbsp sesame oil
1 tsp sriracha sauce
1 tsp kosher salt
2 large chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (white and green parts)

Salad
1 lb Napa cabbage, very thinly sliced
2 carrots, grated

*1 bag of Trader Joe's Shredded Raw Cabbage
*1 container of Trader Joe's Healthy 8 Chopped Veggie Mix
3 green onions, thinly sliced and cut on the diagonal
2/3 cup freshly cut cilantro leaves, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds, dry toasted
1 tsp white sesame seeds, toasted
1 tsp black sesame seeds, toasted

FIVE - A FEW OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS THIS WEEK:

Finger painting a fall tree after nap time. Owen kept asking for "moeeeer" (more) paint.

Watching airplanes come in for landing outside CuriOdyssey.

Reading books together at the book store.

Thanks so much for reading! Now we're off to play with our playgroup this morning! I'm bringing donuts and I hear there will be mimosas! Happy Friday!

I don't normally comment but I have to say I feel the exact same way about being a stay at home mom. I feel like I'm constantly being judged and I have to defend the decision to stay home and justify how I spend my time. It's exhausting! I've been home with my son almost three years now and I still feel that way. It's the best decision I have ever made but it's also the hardest!

For the record, I think being a SAHM is so hard. I'm a WOHM and I'm away from my little girl all week...and I think it's good for us - I don't know that I could do what you do!

And that salad looks so good - may make into our dinners for next week! Have a great weekend!

Hi Colleen! Thank you so much for the feature! It's sad that any mom should have to defend her choice, whether to work of stay home. I'm so glad this post validated your feelings that this is an important work!

Um, I might just stop by Loft asap to try on those chords. I do love any excuse to swing by downtown burlingame! I also have had a couple pairs of chords from Loft before, and I too love the comfort.

Also, that salad looks delicious! Pinning now!

I feel the same way about being a SAHM. It's really hard sometimes when I'm around all of my husband's fellow interns and they look to me and ask, "So, what do you do all day?" Ugh. It's a tough job!!

I don't own one single pair of corduroys! Those do look pretty comfy. I'll have to check out that album and get some finger painting supplies. That looks like fun!

Sounds like y'all have had a good week.... and I'm totally reading that article. Even though I'm working part-time now, I completely relate about feeling the need to justify my decision to stay at home. And why???? I have no clue, but I still do.

Happy weekend to you, girl!

Blah, who cares what people think/say?! I only WISH I could stay home with my 4 month old love bug. Instead I get up every day and leave him to go to work. :(
Bummer people feel the need to question your reasoning, though. What do they care? I'd say just enjoy it and ignore the haters. ;)

I feel the same way about being a SAHM! Not sure why anyone feels the need to question or why I feel like I have to justify our decision, but people have plenty of opinions, don't they? My favorite is the people who act as though you should never have a bad day because you're home...that just isn't the case for ANY job. You're doing good work, mama, keep it up! :)

Thank you for sharing that post. I also feel like I have to defend my decision a lot. Being a mom is hard work no matter how we do it. That post just says so much thanks for sharing!

The SAHM thing is so true. I feel like we always say, "I stay at home, BUT I USED TO be...." There is no need to list what we used to be. It isn't what validates us or what makes us who we are. I've been working really hard at just confidently saying- I'm a stay at home mama! the end.

I love those pants! I love colored pants, but then I get paranoid people will start noticing I'm wearing the same pants over and over, because with jeans you can't tell. Haha!

I am a working mom and feel like i have to explain myself when I tell people that I work!! I remember being pregnant and a MUCH older woman told me that she never could have lived with herself if she worked while her kids were growing up...I almost melted right there!! I give you pounds and pounds of credit for being a SAHM. I do it in the summers and it's HARD. I don't know how you do it!
