Meet the Sullivans: Owen's First Trip to Disneyland (Part One)

Owen's First Trip to Disneyland (Part One)

Well, friends, we've made it home safe and sound from our trip to Disneyland! It was just as fun and magical as we remembered it, and maybe even a little more magical because we got to experience it through Owen's eyes! The drive down was a breeze, and the trip was amazing, but the drive home and our first few days back were definitely less than stellar. Owen got sick twice on the way home, we got caught in traffic (twice!!!) and then when we came home Keith came down with the flu. We're all back to normal now and I'm finally able to look back on our pictures and all the great memories we made.

AND, because I know you're all just DYING to hear me hash out every last detail of the trip (I'll try to keep it concise!), I'll get right to it...

We both showered the night before and woke up ready to rock at 5am. Owen, of course, decided this would be the perfect day to sleep in, even through all the ruckus we made getting our selves dressed, etc. For probably the first time in his life I actually had to wake him up from sleeping -- still can't believe I did that. We hit the road by 5:30!

Owen did really well during the ride down. He played with a few of the new surprises we had stashed away for him, watched a movie, ate snacks and then right before we got there he took a nap. We made great time and managed to only stop once about three hours in! We had planned on stopping more, but he was content, so we figured we should keep going. It was way better than we had hoped for!

I'll probably do a post soon about all of our preparations, etc. and what we made sure to pack, since I know I would have loved to read something like that before traveling on a long road trip with a toddler for the first time.

We arrived at the hotel around 11am, checked our bags with the bellhop, and then went straight into the park. All of the staff at the Disneyland Hotel (and the parks too!) were so accommodating. I felt so obnoxious with our 9+ bags, fishing through them for what we needed to head straight into the park, but they were all so patient. Disney REALLY knows customer service!

After grabbing a quick lunch in the park (and watching The Jedi Training Academy show) we tried getting on Autotopia. We thought Owen would enjoy it, but he was too tired and got upset. Luckily we were able to get him on it later in the trip and he had a blast!

Owen had quite the little set up with his snacks, fan and reclining throne seat. I'm so happy we brought our BOB Stroller. Owen took his nap in the stroller each day. The canopy was large enough to keep him comfortable (the weather was great for our entire trip, just really hot the first two days) in the heat, and it reclines far enough for him to sleep in it for a while. I also bought a stroller fan on Zulily, which was brilliant (if I do say so myself). No less than 6 people asked me about it in the first day wanting to know where they could get one.

When Owen was napping Keith usually used a FastPass to go on Star Tours or Indiana Jones while I strolled around the park getting Owen to nap or browsing the shops.

Disney not only has customer service down to a science, but they also know the desserts out. of. the. park. Check out those caramel apples! My favorite one has to be the Fantasia Mickey apple, but the Jack-o-Lantern wins a close second. We got to see so many of their cute Halloween things while we were there too!

While we were there they were setting up for their annual Halloween celebration, which started Friday the 13th. Unfortunately this meant the park closed at 7 o'clock most nights we were there, which we were pretty upset about, but it worked out because we were all ready to sleep by 8 each night.

We also spent nap time on this gorgeous terrace on a few days drinking the prettiest mai tais -- it was really rough!

They tasted even better than they look!

This was the view from our room! We had so much fun swimming in the afternoons, and Owen loved the toddler slides! I think they could have been his favorite part of his trip!

I made sure to have a cute Disney shirt for Owen to wear each day. My personal favorite, and the one I was asked about the most, was the one I ordered from Leah! I'm keeping it forever -- isn't it sweet?!

We didn't spend too much awake time in our room, but when we did, Owen loved to sit on our bed (or jumps!) and watch the firework show you could turn on on the headboard. It even played "When You Wish Upon a Star". A fun and magical way to wake up each morning!

Since we were on vacation just the three of us, and I don't like depending on random people to get a good shot, we took full advantage of the PhotoPass. Whenever we saw one of the Disney photographers we stopped and had them take our picture, one with their camera and one with ours. Our package (which we purchase through Costco -- highly recommend!) came with a free 8 x 10, so we bought one print, but we also have all of our own photos (centered and with the right lighting, etc).

That's all for today! I'll be back later this week to recap more of our trip and share some more tips and lessons learned.

I can't wait to take my daughter to Disney now!! Sounds like you were prepared, had everything you needed, and had a great time. Bummer about getting sick on your way back though. :( I love the Mickey shirt, great idea of buying a fan, and that head support band is genius, I'll have to get one.

What a fun family trip!! I love Owen's Mickey shirt :)
Is it silly that one of the reasons I want to wait a little bit for our next kid is so we can take J to Disney?? Haha!

What a fun trip!! I love your little gadges: The head band for the car seat and the stroller fan...we don't get too much heat up here in Maine, but the BOB doesn't allow for much ventilation (my only complaint...I love our BOB!), so this could come in handy!!

Have a great week! xo

SO much fun! How nice that you live within 3 hours of Disneyland--you can go every year! And I know I say this all the time, but Owen could NOT be any cuter! Seriously!

I LOVE those caramel apples! I would be horrible and buy one and never eat it because they're so pretty. You taking your son to Disney at a young age makes me feel good about my decision to take my children there at a younger age. (whenever I do have kids!) So glad you guys are enjoying your trip!

I cannot WAIT to take Ethan to Disneyland for the first time. I grew up about 20 minutes from Disneyland and luckily my parents still live close by. I still feel like it's a magical place even now (at almost 30!) but I really can't wait to relive all of the magic through Ethan's eyes. Love his shirt and LOVE the room with the fun light up headboard. So so fun!
