He will gladly sit down in almost anyone's lap to hear them read him a book. He'll even let me read him the newspaper sometimes, if there are pictures, of course. He likes all of his books, but there are about dozen or so that he has a certain affinity for. He's drawn to them like we're drawn to some of our own favorite books or movies. He'll happily sit and pretend to read his books to himself, vaguely piecing together the parts he remembers while I get dressed.
It's been a long time since I shared some of Owen's favorite books. His taste in books has changed a little bit from what he liked when he was 8 months-old! He's also much less likely to try and eat his books these days!
Toddlers like familiarity and predictability, so we read these books over and over -- we all, even Owen, have them memorized at this point. They've become family favorites, you could say. I know that someday in the future I'll come across them and they'll remind me of these busy, sweet, silly days.
Dinosaur Roar- Keith picked this book out for Owen, and he's really proud of having picked such a favorite. The book is all about opposites, specifically in dinosaurs.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar- A classic, and one of my personal favorites. I love Eric Carle's artwork. Owen likes to pretend to eat all the food in the book.Warning: Might initiate a post bath, pre-bedtime snack request when read before bed.
Red Truck- If your child likes The Little Blue Truck books they will probably like this book too. It's about a tow truck heading out in the snow to help a school bus full of children. The book starts off by telling you "red truck is a tow truck, a work truck NOT a show truck" and I always joke with Owen and ask him if the tow truck is a show truck and he gets pretend mad and says "No mommy! NOT a show truck!" He thinks it's silly.
Good Night San Francisco- A fun book for people in our area! They make them for lot of other big cities (NYC, Boston, Philly, Los Angeles, etc. ) and many states too. Similar to Good Night Moon (another fave!) the book caries you through saying goodnight to our surroundings, in this case it's San Francisco landmarks like the Academy of Science, the Golden Gate Bridge and the cable cars, etc.
Down by the Bay- We like to make up our own lyrics to the song when we take road trips (things like "...for if I do my mother would say, "Did you ever see a Gorilla with hella skrilla?" or "Did you ever see a Chetta eating a fajita" Try it yourself, it's fun!
Jamberry- This is one of my favorites that I kind of pushed on Owen and he finally loves it too! I love the illustrations and the rhyming throughout the book. It makes me want to take Owen berry picking!
B Is for Bulldozer- I can credit this book with giving me a daily refresher on the names of all the "worker trucks" Owen loves so much. The book takes readers through the alphabet as you tour a construction site where a theme park is being built. We usually read this one 2-3 times through before moving on to another book.
The Fire Engine Book- Owen obviously loves this book, as it makes him feel like he's riding along on the fire engine with the fire fighters! I love the vintage look of the pictures and fire engines, as well as the fact that it was first published in the 1950s. Also, it's only $3.41 on Amazon right now!
What are your family's favorite books? We're always adding new books to our collection, so I would love to hear your suggestions!
