Meet the Sullivans: Pool Day Essentials

Pool Day Essentials

Summer is in full swing and we're spending many days each week poolside. Owen loves the  water, and loves getting to play with the other children in the kiddie pool at our gym. I love that we get to be outside expending all of our energy before nap time! With all the time we spend swimming you'd think we'd be permanently waterlogged!

The things I pack for the pool change from year to year based on Owen's needs -- last year he was too small for floaties and didn't do much playing in the water--, but there are some essentials that are here to stay! (for at least another couple years!) So here are some of our favorite pool day essentials that we just can't swim without.

1. wet skin sunscreen spray - Since I can't get Owen out of the water without a huge fit, Wet Skin SPF is a MUST if I want to keep his fair skin protected. The big plus is that it's a spray too!
2. dive darter's fish - He's not afraid of dunking himself in the water and he loves to go swimming down to the floor (of the 1 foot deep kiddie pool) for his toys!
3. puddle jumper - Most of the time Owen is sans life jacket, since it's better for him to be aware of his capabilities. But when we go in a big pool or the pool is really busy, I feel better knowing he's extra safe.
4. rashguard - He hates wearing this shirt, but I make him. He'd hate a burn even more!
5. cloth swim diaper - These are required at our pool, and now I swear by them. No more 10lb water filled swim diaper.
6. swim trunks - I'm so glad I stocked up on multiple pairs this year since we're swimming day after day after day! There are some cute ones on sale at Old Navy!
7. keens - I swear by these shoes for Summer time! They give support, while also being waterproof and protecting their toes (unlike flip flops) -- and they're machine washable!
8. bucket hat - He loves wearing hats, and when we're in the hot sun it's a must for our blonde haired, blue-eyed boy.
9. wet bag - We recently got one of these in our Citrus Lane box and we love it! No more wet clothes soaking everything else in our bags!

Now I just need to designate a bag to be our pool bag and we'll be all set. I've been using a diaper bag as my gym / pool / diaper bag and the constant shuffling of all our stuff is driving me batty! When heading to the pool what do you always make sure to pack?

Great list. I've seen these puddle jumpers alot this summer. My kids already know how to swim, but if I had a younger one, I would definitely use one!!

I've never seen the wet skin sunscreen - that's awesome! Also, I have always wanted to try Keens for my kiddos!

I'm loving the wet pack. I just use a plastic bag-- waay less attractive. Also, the wet skin sunscreen rocks!!!

I really want to get one of those puddle jumpers. Great list, we take a lot of similar items. I do have a designated pool bag ready to go at all times with sunscreen, towels, and pool toys. I add snacks and we're ready to go!

Love this list, and the color coordinating! ;-) We are all about cloth swim diapers too (although we use cloth full time), the other soggy ones gross me out! So nice your pool requires it. Wet bags are amazing too... For everything! We really like the planet wise ones on amazon. It never hurts to have a few!

Oh a wetbag is a great idea! And I love the sinking fish. I bet Mac would really like those. We definitely need to take advantage of the kiddie pool this summer. Mac loves the water!

Great list! Although, I did recently read about how a lot of spray sunscreens are being pulled because children (and adults, but kids dont hold their breath) can inhale the chemicals. I would just spray in your hands then rub it on if that concerns you. And I totally apologize, I hate being the debbie downer commenter, but just wanted to throw the awareness out incase you wanted to google about it. Of course, I totally get that spraying a toddler is the easiest, so no judgment, just wanted to share what I recently read!!

I love these posts! It's fun to see what everyone else brings and what I'm missing :)

We really need the puddle jumper. All of our friends have it and the life-vest that I got Sawyer just isn't cutting it.

Love this post! We've been looking at life jackets for Hudson and I think the puddle jumper would be perfect!

I love this list! Ours looks a lot like this one, but yours has more fun things in it :) So, those swim diapers/pants -do they work? The disposable swim ones I've used haven't been holding everything like they should and I'm just terrified that they will leak when we are at a public pool, which would be just awful!

This is a great list of items!!

I don't think you can prevent #1 from leaking out when a child is swimming in a pool, but #2 can def be contained in a cloth diaper even better than in a disposable. Owen's never gone #2 in the pool, but from what our swim instructors have said I know the cloth ones are much more sanitary for everyone. And there is no yucky, soggy diaper to deal with!

It's the best life preserver I've seen for toddlers!

Thanks for the heads up, Erin!

Owen wears a 2t / 3t in pants, so I bought him a 2t in his swim diaper!
