Last weekend, for Keith's 35th birthday barbeque I decided to try out a new watermelon & strawberry sangria recipe. I did my research on the internet and checked out a lot of watermelon drink recipes before deciding to wing it and make my own. It turned out great!
Ingredients
12 cups cubed watermelon
3 cups strawberries, quartered with stems removed
1 bottle white wine
1 1/2 cups vodka
1/2 cup triple sec
1 1/2 cup strawberry lemonade
1 lime, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
Directions
1. Place 9 cups of watermelon cubes in a blender; blend on high until very smooth. Strain juice through a mesh strainer into a large pitcher. Place 2 cups of the strawberries in the blender; blend on high until smooth, pour into the pitcher.
2. Pour the wine, vodka, triple sec, and simple syrup into the pitcher. Stir to combine.
3. Mix the remaining 3 cups of watermelon cubes, the lime quarters, orange sections, and blueberries into the sangria. Chill for 4 hours before serving. Best serves on the rocks.
A few tips and notes:
- 12 cups of watermelon seems like a lot of watermelon, but it doesn't make a ton, so don't skimp on any.
- Don't skip the straining step, the pulp would make the drink too thick and smoothie like.
- I considered making these frozen melon ball skewers as a garnish, but ran out of time. They would really "make" the drink!
- Play with the ingredients to make it as strong or light as you like. This could even be a great aquas fresca without the alcohol.
- I doubled most of the ingredients so that it would fill the beverage jar.
- A few other adult drinks we've served in bulk for parties: apple cider sangria, peach pineapple mango sangria and mai tais.
