Friday Favorites

Hello, Friday! It's been a busy and exhausting week, but we've had lots of fun too. Here's my five:

one. Owen had been in VBS all week and he has been loving it! He is so tired, but in a great mood each day when we pick him up.  I bought the CD of five of the songs they sing each day and he sings along to it in the car. Tonight at dinner he told Keith and I that he prayed that Jesus would "still live with (him) for always", so I think it's been a great influence in him. It's a huge camp with lots and lots of kids, so I'm proud of him for being being brave and separating from us so easily each morning.

two. Last night I was prepping dinner and realized we were out of the pesto I needed, so I decided to use what I had to make a substitution. I used arugula and walnuts in place of basil and pine nuts, and it turned out really great!

three. Does anyone out there know anything about DIYing a barn door? There are two in the model of our home and I just know it would be cheaper to do it ourselves and it doesn't seem that difficult, right? I don't think we'll put one in the master, but likely downstairs to separate the dining room and play room.

four. Keith and I had great date last weekend! It had been way too long since we'd been out together without the kids. We got to tour the model without the kids, which allowed us to really talk about what we wanted to do with it, and we went to lunch and to do some shopping -- but the best part was just being able to have conversations without being interrupted 10,000x!

five. I picked up two pairs of the Tuff Athletics leggings from Costco after hearing from several people about how amazing they were, and they really are great! They're so comfortable and soft, and the material is just thick enough. Got get yourself a pair!

That's all for now. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Look, No Training Wheels!

A few weeks ago Owen attended a week long, half-day Learn to Bike Camp through Avid 4 Adventure! The class is geared toward children going into PreK through Kindergarten who want to learn the joys of self-sufficient cycling while having fun.

Owen's journey to biking independently began years ago when we bought him his first bike, a balance bike, and he started to learn to ride it. Around Christmas time Keith's mom gave him a "real bike" with training wheels to help take him to the next level. He loved getting out to pedal around on it, so we knew he'd be ready to at least attempt riding it without the wheels. Hello, Bike Camp!

The camp takes place on-site and the ratio on instructor to student is 4:1 so that the children get lots of individualized attention and coaching. Owen's class had just three children in it, so he got loads of attention. Each day the students played games on and off their bikes, had snack, did yoga and crafts. The drills and games they did on their bikes were all fun and helped them build the confidence they needed to ride without training wheels. I thought this was such a neat way to help them get some extra time on their bikes!

I would say that each child in his group was at a different bike riding ability level at the start of camp, but their teacher made sure to accommodate everyone's need individually. All the students started practicing on regular bikes, without pedals, from day one, and I think this was a huge factor in their success.

I tried to arrive a little early to pick Owen up each day so I could observe him while he learned, and I was amazed to see that he was already pedaling without training wheels on the second day of camp! What a thrill it was to see! He was so proud of himself!

We were so pleased with our experience at this camp! It was a great, outdoor, adventuerous camp for Owen, and the HUGE bonus is that he was able on hone in on his bike riding skills and reach a new milestone!

If you are looking for a  camp this summer that encourages your child to get outside, connect with nature, and enjoy an authentic adventure, then I encourage you to check out all of the amazing camps Avid 4 Adventure has to offer!

Hey, Friday!

Another fun filled week is behind us, and we're so glad the weekend is here! Here are a few randome thoughts and random things on this Friday morning...

Our shopping cart game changed earlier this week, because Luke is able to happily and independently sit in the cart! This change makes our shopping trips a little easier (no more jamming the car seat into the basket), and only a little less crazy!

Of course, as much as I try to stick to my list I never do. I picked up a few of these Yummy Spoonfuls baby food pouches, a Star Wars t-shirt for Owen to wear to his buddy's Star Wars birthday party this weekend, and of course HGTV Magazine!

Where is your favorite place to buy furniture? I love Pottery Barn, but most of their pieces are just a little more than I want to spend. We've bought a few things from Costco randomly, and I saw the cabinet above earlier this week. It's a lot like the one I want from Pottery Barn. Thoughts?

We've had our share of Ikea things, and while it's all served it's purpose, I'd like to buy higher quality pieces, that will last for the long haul. Specifically, I'm looking for a new arm chair similar to this one, a buffet / sideboard similar to this and some end tables for now.

I haven't colored my hair in 5 months and I'm kind of okay with it! I used to have my hair highlighted every 2-3 months, and I'm not saying I think it looks great, but it's kind of working for me. Maybe it's because it almost has a bit of a balayage look to it? Don't quote me on that. But I did make time for a pedicure this week! I tried a new color (forget the name) different from my go to favorite, OPI Mod About You. What is your favorite summer nail color?

Luke had his first experience in the kiddie pool this week, and he LOVED it! I sat him in it and he occupied himself for the longest time by trying to catch little pieces of grass (tracked in by Owen). He's such a chill little guy!

We've got a busy weekend ahead with a birthday party, church and all our usual errands -- plus a day date for Keith and I! We been on one date since Luke was born, so I'm really looking forward to it.

That's all for now. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Luke is 7 Months!

Oh Mr. Luke, you're 7 months old! We're over halfway through your first year of life and I'm not ready for the baby stage to be over yet. I enjoy caring for, and loving you so much -- you bring so much joy to my days!

Stats:  You weigh 18lbs 5oz. (still need to weigh you!) You are wearing 6-12 month clothes and size 3 diapers.
Eating: You're still loving to eat! I feed you 3 meals a day, although if you eat too much or too little at lunch it makes dinner a bigger or smaller meal for you, so really you're probably getting the equivalent of 2-ish meals a day at this point. You love sweet potatoes, most veggies and any baby food with meat. You're not a fan of anything with apricots or mangoes. Sweet isn't really your thing I guess.

You are still breastfeeding like a little champ! I think my supply is better this time around since we haven't done any supplementing. If I need to go out somewhere I try to pump the night before and then again first thing in the morning, which usually give me a 4-5 hour window to be out. You're also drinking a little water here and there with your meals. You LOVE water, but I'm trying to limit it since you get all the hydration you need from breast milk.

Sleep: Oh, sleep. You're up a ton throughout the night, and often wake up to party around 4am and stay up for an hour before going back to sleep. You nap 2-3 times a day and sleep for about 1-2 hours at a time. Bedtime is around 7pm right now, but you only stay asleep for a couple hours at a time at night.

Health: You've stayed pretty healthy this month. You caught a little cold last week, but you're already over it. We're still battling cradle cap, but it's not as bad as it was a couple months ago.

  • You can almost hold yourself up on the couch if we assist you in getting there -- you have very strong legs. You sit unassisted. You grab and hold things with your hands.
  • You're babbling a ton, and you are saying "dadadada" among other things.
  • You can identify your family and feel safe with the people you're familiar with.
  • You can get up on all fours!
Likes: Swimming in the pool, watching leaves, when Owen talks baby talk to you (you both laugh!), getting your hands on Owen's toys, exploring outside and touch flowers and leaves.

Dislikes: Being on your back, getting strapped into your car seat, when Owen smothers you.

Luke you are a sweetheart! You are gentle, easy going and sweet as can be! We love you more than I could ever express in words!

10 on 10 : July 2016

10 pictures on the 10th day of the month!

{Document a snapshot of your life & find beauty among the ordinary things in your day!}
ten on ten button
Yesterday was the tenth of the month, so I tried to document our day by snapping ten photos to show what we were up to. This is Sunday, July 10th, 2016!
Keith was camping at the end of last week and over the weekend, and came home yesterday, so most of this 10 on 10 is just me and the kiddos for most of the day.
Our morning started bright and early at 6am, so we were ready to be out early. We grabbed some snacks and a coffee for me at Starbucks to our way to the park. I got my usual: a double tall, non-fat, vanilla latte.

We met my friend Amanda at the park, so she and I chatted while we watched Owen play. Our husbands are camping together so it was a nice excuse to hang out on a Sunday morning. Luke slept most of the time.

After the park I took the boys to the book store to pick a couple books for Owen. I really wish bookstores didn't sell toys too, because Owen always gets distracted by them.

We love Magic Tree House books! I have a small collection of them from when I taught Kindergarten, and I kept them in hopes that my own children would enjoy them someday. I can't believe we're already into reading Owen chapter books! I love reading them to him.

We ate lunch when we got home. I used up whatever was left in the fridge for my lunch. That's got to be the one nice thing about when Keith goes camping; I don't feel like I have to cook as much or gp shopping for as much food!
Keith called to let us know he'd be home very soon, so we hung around and played for a while while we waited for him.

We pretty much build with Legos all the time these days!  As you can see Luke is really interested in them too. It's going to be a challenge keeping him from all of those tiny pieces once he's mobile.

Yesterday we worked on building our own "Hoth base", which of course was Owen's idea!

When Keith came home we were all SO happy to see him! We really missed him while he was gone. He looked like a mountain man after not shaving or having a proper shower for 4+ days. We had him take a quick shower before we all went to see the models for our townhome. They opened while Keith was gone, so while I got to see it with my mom, sister, Owen, Keith's mom and sisters and our nieces, Keith was the only one who hadn't seen it yet!

Owen loves running around the houses! His favorite room is what will be the boys' toy room, and the room he calls "Daddy and Owen's video game room".
And of course my favorite room is the kitchen! I'm already planning where I'll keep everything.

We ordered pizza for dinner, put the kids to bed and watched 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's so nice having Keith home again!

And that was our day!

Five on Friday

My gosh this week went fast! One of the things I love most about a 3-day weekend is the short week that follows. Keith is on a camping trip this week, so I'm parenting solo right now. It's times like these that I feel really fortunate to have so many family members around to help out and keep us company.

Here's a little bit of this and that...

| O N E | Orange is the New Black - Are you a fan of the show? I didn't think I'd like it when it first came out, because of how raunchy and sad it can be, but as soon as I got past the first episode I was hooked. I really love watching the back story of each character and seeing who they really are. I love how complex they are! I binge watch the seasons (as much as I can!) when they come out and right now I just have the finale left to watch of the most recent season.

| T W O | Owen is in his second session of swim lessons for the summer and he's really getting the hang of swimming, finally! It's such a joy to watch him accomplish things like this and reach these milestones. In the last year we've seen him become more independent, get potty trained, learn to ride a bike and now swim. I feel like he's grown up SO much in the last year!

| T H R E E | Have you seen these Invitation to Create activities before? I pinned this little activity for Owen a while back and have been meaning to recreate it for him. There are all different variations of the same idea, like cupcakes, bugs, turkeys etc. Now if I could just find the time to pull it all together!

| F O U R | Have I talked about these Greek Turkey Burgers before? You've probably seen them on Pinterest! They are SO GOOD! Definitely a Pin win! I usually serve them on a sweet potato bun or on a salad but they'd be great in a pita or even over quinoa or orzo.

| F I V E | Tomorrow the models for our town home open! It's a funny feeling to be committed to a house I've never actually seen in person or even in a photo. I finally got to see a picture of what the main floor will look like last night. Unfortunately, the grand opening is while Keith is gone, so he'll have to see it another time. I'm so excited I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight!

That's all for now! Have a lovely weekend, my friends!

4th of July Weekend

Hey there! It is always so hard to get back into the swing of things after an extra long and fun weekend like the one we just had. I can't believe it's already the middle of the week, because I still feel like we're recovering from the weekend.

Our weekend was filled with friends, family, barbecuing and a whole lot of celebrating! Here are some pictures from the actual 4th of July. For the last few years we've spent the day at our neighborhood parade and festival. The whole thing is so small town, and it's the perfect way to spend the day with our little family.

Owen loves seeing the giant fire engines in the parade, and of course all the candy they throw out to the kids. He also loves the midway games and the little prizes he gets. It's a fun time all around!

We skipped fireworks this year -- it just gets so crowded going to see them and with Luke it is hard to be out so late in this cold weather. After having lunch at the festival we barbecued at home and spent the rest of the evening hang out. Needless to say, but we both crashed as soon as the boys were asleep!

I hope you had a lovely 4th of July with your loved ones too!
