Our Holiday Style with Gymboree + Giveaway!

Christmas season is upon us, my friends, and we are getting ready to celebrate in style! There is nothing I love more than an excuse to buy new outfits for the boys. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually really fun to dress little boys! From hats to socks, suspenders and cozy sweaters, there are so many options!

I like to have them coordinate, rather than match most of the time, and because of their size difference it can be difficult to find cute things that work for both of their ages. Luckily, I know I can always depend on Gymboree for colorful, head-to-toe clothing and accessory collections—quality clothes that let kids be kids!

In our family, we do big Christmas celebrations with family on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! On Christmas Eve we attend the children's mass at our church, and then have a big family dinner and gift exchange. It is a really fun time for everyone, especially all the kids. We usually dress up more for Christmas Eve, and dress more relaxed on Christmas Day.

I love going to Gymboree in person and online for all our holiday needs, because I know I can find everything I need for Owen from outfits to accessories. This year we went with the full shebang for Owen with the Shawl Pullover, Chambray Trim Shirt, Herringbone Pants, Dressy Tie, Argyle Socks, Lace-up Boots, Striped Suspenders and Tweed Cap. All of these can be found on the Gymboree website!

Owen's favorite piece was of course the Tweed Cap, and he keeps asking to wear it to school!

For Luke we went with a Fire Truck Vest, Gold Plaid Shirt, Fire Truck Beanie, Khaki Herringbone Pants and Red Bow Tie. What is it about little baby boy's that make sweater vests so cute? Can you believe that little Luke is wearing 18 month sizes here? They looked huge to me when I pulled them out of the box, but they fit!

RECIPE: Zucchini Zoodles and Meatballs

Hey there and happy Friday, my friends. Guess what? Today is my birthday! Yep, 35 years young-ish. The older I get the less I care about my birthday and I really like it this way. The boys and I are having a low-key day and we're ordering pizza for dinner. Win, win! Anyway I am here today to share a favorite recipe that I hope you'll enjoy!

This is one of our easy go-to meals that I keep in our dinner rotation, so today I'm here to share it with you! This is one of those dinners I know by heart, so I don't even really follow a recipe anymore.

I LOVE a recipe I can throw together by memory and that doesn't require directions!

I pretty much always have these ingredients on hand, especially the grass-fed ground beef, because we always stock up on that at Costco. I use the Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Slicer (purchased on Amazon) to spiralize the zucchini, although I have heard you could use a vegetable grater to create some similar pieces, but I think using this tool is much easier!

The whole point of a recipe like this is to keep things light and healthy, yet filling, so I make a few adjustments to the regular meatball recipe I use too.

For the meatballs: 
1.5 lbs ground beef 95% lean 
1/4 cup whole wheat Italian breadcrumbs 
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated 
1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped 
1 egg white
2 cloves garlic, crushed 
1 tsp kosher salt + fresh pepper
2-3 tbsp olive oil 
1 jar light marinara
For the zoodles:
4-5 medium sized zucchini
a pinch of salt, for taste

1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg white, parsley, garlic and parm. Using clean, and semi-damp hands mix the ingredients together until evenly blended. Form small meatballs, and set them aside.

2. Heat the olive oil in a heavy bottom pan, and add the meatballs. Let them brown on each side a bit before adding the marinara sauce. Once they've browned a bit on all sides pour the whole jar of marinara on top of them. Shake the pan gently to help them get coated evenly with the sauce. Turn the burner on low, cover the pan and let them simmer like that while you make the zoodles.

This is the marinara sauce I picked up this particular time. I really like this one and it's usually on sale too, which is nice!

3. While the meatballs and sauce are chilling, go ahead and spiralize your zucchini. I don't bother peeling mine first, not sure if you're supposed to? Doesn't make any difference to me, so I skip that step. You can either microwave them in a bowl for a few minutes or drop them in boiling water for a minute or two.

I prefer the boiling water. Afterward drain them in a colander. They cool fast, so move them straight to a bowl, top them with some sauce and a few meatballs and a little parm and ENJOY!

Weekending: A New Design, Pumpkin Farm & the Cozy Coupe

Well, hello there! First off, I want to hear what you think of our new look? I'm loving how clean and simple it is, and I hope you all like it too! I still need to take an updated head shot, so for now I'm using the only non-wedding, non-selfie photo I have of myself.

It's Wednesday and I'm finally here documenting the weekend. It's not like this week has been any extra busy or anything, just regular busy, which is busy enough these days. I have about five minutes to write this while Owen is in school and Luke is still napping in the car seat, so let's get on with it!

These two cuties! Luke is finally willing and able to ride in his Cozy Coupe! The moment Owen saw me pushing Luke around in the car he requested to take over. Luke may have looked a tiny bit scared (don't blame him at all for that!), but he also really seemed to enjoy it. This all lasted for about three minutes until Owen felt like it should be his turn for a ride. I wish I had a picture of my big 'ol almost five year-old squeezed into that little car.

On Saturday afternoon (after the gym, of course) Keith and I got to have a day date! We almost didn't know what to do with ourselves. We thought about going to a movie, but decided we didn't really want to sit inside a dark theater on such a nice day, so we opted for lunch, shopping and a visit to see how our house is doing. I'd been dying to try the Chilaquiles at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Milagros, so we went there.

The house is coming along slowly, but steadily! It is so fun for us to check it out each week to see what they've done. We actually snuck into the structure (not supposed to do that) for the first time and although I've already been in the finished model a bunch of times it was really neat to step foot in our own house. It's almost time to make the final decisions on the finishes too!

We spent the rest of the day hanging at home with the boys and doing stuff around the house.

I think we go to Costco almost every weekend these days, so it's no surprise we were there early Sunday morning. They have all sort of toys for Christmas right now, so we added some ideas to Owen and Luke's wish lists, and I got a couple ideas for myself. The Seasoned Life and Skinny Taste: Fast and Slow are on my list of cookbooks to check out!

I can never get all of my grocery shopping done at just one store, so after we unloaded everything from Costco I had to go back out to Safeway for some smaller items we can't get at Costco. I also picked up this wine by Once Upon a Vine and Keith and I agreed that it was really good for a $13 bottle. Not gonna lie, I totally picked it because I liked the label.

Keith was home on Monday, so I got to take Owen on his field trip to the pumpkin farm! Lukey and Keith went to the gym while O and I drove out to Farmer John's Pumpkin Farm to meet his class. It was nice having some time to talk to Owen in the car, but once we arrived he pretty much took off without me and ran around with his buddies. I'm not even sure he cared I was there most of the time!

The kids got to go on a hay ride, pick a pumpkin from the patch, have a little farm lesson and pretend to drive a tractor! It was a really fun time for the whole class!

Recipe: Sweet Potato Bunless Burgers

In an effort to cut back on dinners centered around breads and pastas we've been substituting roast, steamed or sauteed vegetables into our dinners in their place. A couple years ago we tried using slices of roast sweet potato instead of buns on our burgers, and we all loved it so much that it's pretty much the only way we do burgers at home now.

Not only is it a little healthier than using a regular bun, but I also don't have to feel bad about throwing away the leftover buns -- because we can never seem use up the whole bag. Do you have the same problem? I always think of a scene from one of my favorite movies when I toss out those extra buns....

I just laugh out loud every time I see that scene! Anyway, here is my solution to the bun and burger ratio...

For the "buns":
4 large sweet potatoes
olive oil
salt and pepper, to taste

For the burgers: 
1 1/2 pounds 80% lean ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
8 thin slices cheddar cheese (optional)
lettuce and sliced tomato, for topping

For the "buns": Slice sweet potatoes into 1/4-1/2 inch thick slices. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in oven at 400 for 20-30 minutes (flipping half-way through). You want edges to be slightly crispy.

For the burger: Sprinkle the ground beef evenly with 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Gently form the meat into balls, about 1-inch-thick patties, that will fit with the size of your "buns". The number of burgers you make will vary depending on the size of the "buns" you make. Make a 2-inch-wide indentation in the center of each with your thumb to prevent the burgers from bulging when grilled.

Preheat a grill to high. Season the patties with salt and pepper. Grill, undisturbed, until marked on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes. Turn and grill until the other side is marked and the patties feel firm, 3 to 5 more minutes; if desired, top each burger with 2 slices cheese during the last 2 minutes of cooking.

Serve your burgers topped with all of your favorite toppings. We like grilled onions, guacamole, tomato and lettuce.

Getting Ready for Swim!

The traditional swim season may be over,  but that doesn't mean we won't still be spending time in the pool this fall! As you might remember, Owen learned to swim this summer in his swim classes. He had been taking swimming every season at our old gym, but he finally learned to swim this summer when we signed him up at a new swim school. I want him to keep improving his swim skills and to retain all that he has learned, so as a fun one-on-one activity Owen and I go swimming together about once a week.

Going to swim with kids can be a huge undertaking, especially when I'm getting into the pool with the kids, so here is a look at what we do and pack to get ready for swimming!

Before we leave for swimming I always get Owen dressed in his swim clothes. I know some people like to do that once they get to the pool, but since it's still fairly warm here I save us the hassle, and save us the time by getting him all dressed before we leave the house.

I also get dressed in my suit because although I don't need to be in the pool with him for his classes I usually try to get in with him after his class so we can have some fun and get a little extra practice in. 

For our independent swim time I like to bring in our own toys and swim accessories, like these fun Kids Monster Claw Fins and Pool Noodle. Owen absolutely loves the fins and I that they help him swim faster!

We love that the pool noodle is an excellent tool for him to practice kicking drills, encourages swim skill progression by teaching a streamline body position in the water, has adjustable and removable buoys allow for variable buoyancy as his ability improves, and that the noodle has grooves that fit kids hands, allowing easy maneuverability around the pool.

And for after swimming, I always make sure to pack his googles, a wet bag, kid shampoo, his bathrobe, a healthy snack and some cozy clothes for after his shower!

Friday Five: A Thank You, a New Do and Wine

Hello, and happy Friday! We are in for a wet and stormy weekend here. I don't usually mind a good storm. I love an excuse to stay in with my family and cook, bake, watch movies, drink lots of coffee, and all that, but we have a lot of outside time planned this weekend. Today we planned to go to a children's fall festival, tomorrow we have family pictures and on Sunday we are going to the Pumpkin Festival. So, keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't rain for the entire weekend!

Now on to my five...

| O N E | Reader Poll! Thank you so much to everyone who took the reader poll I shared earlier this week! You can read that post HERE. I love hearing your input and love getting your advice! If you haven't taken the poll already please take a second and take it! It is super short and I will be forever thankful! Take the poll.

| T W O | A new do. Owen got a (very handsome!) haircut after school yesterday! I used a photo to show the stylist the look I was hoping for and she got it right on the money. I think he looks so cute, but Owen kept looking in the mirrors around the other shops we went to and gave himself a funny look. I think it was different for him to see his hair so short this time since we waited a lot longer between cuts than we usually do.

We go to Just Kids Cuts in Burlingame, and we always try to make an appointment with Carmen if we can! At $20 a pop + tip it's not cheap for a kid's cut, but it is always a good experience for Owen, and they do a nice job, so it's worth it!

| T H R E E | "Christmas list" strategy! Christmas, what?! No, I'm not seriously already talking about Christmas. We learned this little trick from a friend last year, and it is pure parenting brilliance! Owen always wants more toys -- don't all kids? And because I'm home with him we do a lot of shopping / errands together, so he is pretty much always asking for something. 

We always give him warning before we go into a store whether or not it is a "toy buying day" or not, so he ca set his expectations, but that doesn't always work or help, so last year we started doing something else too. We tell him before we go in the store that he can get some ideas for Christmas and that if there is anything he really wants we can take a picture and send it to Santa. Well, my camera is FULL of pictures of toys now, but at least we're side stepping those toy wanting tantrums we used to have!

| F I V E | Girl on the Train. Have you see it yet? I read the book a while ago, and the movie looks really good! I'm hoping to see it come time soon.

10 on 10 : October 2016

10 pictures on the 10th day of the month!

Monday was the tenth of the month, so I tried to document our day by snapping ten photos to show what we were up to. This is Monday, October 10th, 2016!

Monday was Columbus Day, so Keith took the day off work so we could continue our tradition of visiting Lemos Farms in Half Moon Bay with our friends! 

In the morning before getting myself ready (and the kids, and packing the diaper bag, etc. etc.) I tried to pull together most of what everyone will be wearing for our family photos next weekend. I'm trying to keep from having us look too "fall" in these pictures because I plan to use them on the blog as well as in our Christmas card. I'm not sure about my dress yet -- I actually bought 4 to choose from and can't decide!

Like I said, I packed the diaper bag, and as usual, I packed way too much stuff. Gotta have extra clothes for both boys, snacks, drinks, diapers, wet wipes, sanitizer, etc. etc. 

We started going to Lemos with our friends 4 years ago when Owen was Luke's age, and it's become a tradition we all look forward to each year! This cute little pumpkin cut-out is at the start of the farm and every year we get pictures of the kids in the pumpkin. The first year Keith (or was it me?) had to stand behind it and hold Owen up!

Lukey was very reluctant to enjoy much at the pumpkin farm. I tried a few times to get a cute picture of him sitting in a patch of pumpkins, but he did not want to be way from me. I'm hopeful I can get one of him this weekend when we go to Pastorino's Pumpkin Farm.

If you can get both kids in a picture, but only manage to get one to look at the camera it's still a win -- bonus points if they're smiling too! 

Owen was so funny about the goats! We've talked before about how goats might nibble on clothes and like to buck a bit, and O totally remembered all that, so he was kind of keeping his distance. 

We finally took a family picture that was not a selfie! Sure my sweater is all wonky, Luke isn't smiling and Owen is in the middle of jumping off the stairs, but it's still a good picture in my books. Reminder to self: be in more pictures!

Owen has told us many times that he really wants one orange pumpkin and one white pumpkin this year. He picked out his two favorite ones, and then we left them to hop on the train, and forgot to come back for them. Oh well! Good thing we have 3 more pumpkin patch trips on the calendar before Halloween.

The kid crew! You know what's really awesome? When your friends' kids and your kids really like each other and play really well together! It gives us excuses to get together and they entertain each other while the adults socialize. Also, can you spot Lukey in there anywhere? It's like Where's Waldo.

We always follow up our trip to Lemos with a stop for lunch at The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company! They were still serving brunch, and Chilaquiles was on the menu, so of course that's what I ordered. I really want to make it myself sometime! It doesn't seem too difficult.

And that was our day!

Am I dating myself here? Were you a Spice Girls fan back in the day? I can't say I was, but that song really sticks in my head after I hear it.

Anyway! Today I want to share with you five of my all time favorite blog posts I've written. Now, of course I love the ones I've written about the boys and their milestones, or the ones I wrote about our wedding anniversary, etc., but today these are just the ones I'm really just proud of because of the photos in them, the ideas included and some of them also happen to be the most popular posts on my blog.

So here they are, my favorite posts from my blog, in particular order...

IKEA LATT Children's Table Hack - This is not only one of the most popular posts on my blog (thanks, Pinterest), but it is also a personal favorite of mine. When I tackled the task of painting that table for Owen I never thought it would turn out better than I expected, and I was so happy to share the step-by-steps!

My Grocery Shopping Strategy - A lot of the time my favorite blog posts to write are the same kind of posts I like to read on other people's blogs, and one of my favorite things to read is how other people tackle day-to-day stuff. And of course, I take a lot of pride in how I've simplified my grocery shopping / meal planning strategy, so this was a fun one to share.

CurriOdyssey Review - I love exploring new places with my family, from theme parks to open spaces and everywhere in between, and being able to document our experience is always a huge bonus for me. This review of CurriOdyssey is one of my favorite "adventure" posts because we had a membership to the museum for years and Owen and I spent many long afternoons there watching snakes and playing with the fog machine, so we have many great memories there!

10 Things I've Never Done, But Would Like to Do - This post isn't really anything too special, but I liked sharing a random list of facts about myself that you'd otherwise not know. And it got me thinking too! This one goes in the category of blog posts I like to read about other people too, and it got a lot of comments from you guys so I know it was fun and interesting.

Carrot Cupcakes! - This recipe is the very first recipe I shared on my blog way back in 2010 -- and it is actually really embarrassing! My editing, food staging and photography skills have improved enormously since then, and although I am tempted to deleted it all together, I won't. I kind of like being able to look back and see how far my recipe posts have come.

Now that I've shared with you my favorites... I'd love to know YOUR favorite TYPE of posts to see on my blog. Do you like seeing lifestyle posts about what we've been up to lately, recipes, family / kid activities, menu ideas, etc?

Menu Monday: Simple & Healthy Dinner Ideas

It's a holiday weekend for us, so while today is still a day off of school for Owen and work for Keith, dinner still needs to be made tonight, so I've got my menu plan ready for the week. I've been making sure to keep our dinners healthy, and full of lean proteins and vegetables, so this week's menu is a great reflection of that.

On our dinner menu this week: 

Beef and Vegetable Stir-fry with Cauliflower Rice
Carne Asada Salads
Turkey Meatballs over Spaghetti Squash

And a few pictures from the weekend... We spent Saturday afternoon picnicing with my mom and sister at our favorite park. There are a few giant oak trees on the lawn, and they provide a great deal of shade and entertainment for us all!

We took our very first family photos there, and I have quite a few photos of Owen on this tree. It amazes me how much this sweet little person has grown in a few short years!

Lukey enjoyed himself immensely as well! He loved trying salami for the first time, and exploring the grass!

Friday Five

Happy Friday everyone! It's Fall-oween time, my friends! To be honest, I'm not that into Halloween myself. My birthday is October 28th, just days before Halloween, so growing up I often had black & orange costume parties, which kind of just leaves me feeling like meh about the holiday. BUT Owen is really into Halloween, and it is his very favorite holiday, so it has been given a new whole new life in my eyes!

| ONE | Last weekend we decorated the outside of the house for Halloween with TONS of fake cobwebs, skeletons, tombstones, spiders and the like. Seriously, I think we have more Halloween decorations than anyone in our neighborhood. Owen is in Halloween lover's heaven! This weekend we'll be adding some real pumpkins to the mix too.

| TWO | Then, on Wednesday, after the house keepers came, we decorated the inside of the house a bit. I'm scaling it back a bit this year because I really don't want to deal with all the clutter, and the clean-up... YaknowwhatImean? I decided the best time to decorate was after the house was clean because it's also when everything is the neatest and it was so much easier to decorate!

| THREE | Owen has been having such a great time at school lately! He really loves going to school everyday, although he does have one small complaint: that the teachers get to do all the talking, and in his opinion that's "not fair". I laughed out loud for a split second when he told me this, because I know our boy likes to chat and I can just picture him sitting there with a million things to add to the conversation. I quickly reigned it in though when I realized he was serious. I can't believe he'll be in Kindergarten next year at this time!

Oh, and he got to be the "helper" in school yesterday, which was very special to him. He reported back that he got to be at the front of all the lines, put the letters of his name on the board, check the weather and report it back to the class, and hold the flag.

| FOUR | A little house keeping... those of you who have a Blogger blog, have you noticed that your blogroll is missing from your site? I noticed this week, and then saw that other people were complaining about missing theirs. I'm so bummed! I use the blogroll on my blog to quickly see new posts from my favorite blogs, and being on other people's blogroll often drives some great traffic to my site. So this weekend I'm hoping to find some time to re-link all those blogs from my list. Anyway, just had to complain about that for a minute.

| FIVE | Let's talk TV for a sec. Keith and I started watching Westworld last weekend and I am obsessed. Have you watched it? Here is the show in a nutshell: The series takes place in fictional Westworld, a technologically advanced, Western-themed amusement park populated completely by synthetic androids dubbed "Hosts", who cater to high paying visitors dubbed "Newcomers", also known as "Guests", who can do what they wish within the park without fear of retaliation from the Hosts. I'm not usually into Scifi, but this is SO good!

Luke is 10 Months!

Baby Luke, you won't be a baby for too much longer, because you're now 10 months old!

Stats: You are 19 lbs 15 oz currently, which I know because we were at the doctor again last week for your cold. You are wearing mostly 12 month and 12-18 month clothes right now and size 4 diapers.

Eating: You still love to eat and it seems like you're always willing to eat something. You love pouches of sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs, avocado and little bits of whatever I'm eating. You're still mostly a breastfed baby, but you take formula if I'm not around, but you will rarely ever take it from me -- of course!

Sleep: We are currently two nights into sleep training, which I will have to recap in a few weeks once I know if it's worked for us. You were sleeping so poorly that I finally felt like it's something we can, and needed to, do. You take two naps a day, usually at least on is in the car seat driving to or from somewhere. I have an easy time transferring you though, so it's not really a problem.  Your naps can be anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours.

Owen was intent on putting a flower in your hair while I was taking your pictures, but you didn't really mind. This is your life, little guy. #littlebrother

Health: You just got your two top teeth (at the same time!), so now you have four teeth total. You are getting over the cold / cough you came down with after your flu shot last month.

Likes: Being outside, climbing onto anything you can, going after Owen's toys, the magnets on the fridge and dishwasher, the buttons on the printer, baby touch and feel books, people wearing glasses and hats, bath time!! and dogs!

Dislikes: Having grass touch your legs and feet, the snot sucker, diaper changes, shirts going over your head, baby gates. You are a little sensitive, so if someone makes a loud noise (like a shout) you made a sad face and stick out your bottom lip.

  • You're cruising around on all the furniture, and around your crib when I'm trying to get you to sleep. 
  • You can stand for about 20 seconds on your own and can get up into standing from a squat, although you're not close to walking. 
  • You mimic us when you hear us saying words, but "dadada" is still your favorite word for everything.
  • You are great at using your pincer grasp to get bits of food into your mouth, and you even try to turn the crank on your jack-in-the-box. 
  • One way to get you to laugh is to hide something or someone (Owen!) under a blanket and let you find it. 
  • You can squat down from standing to lower yourself to the ground. 
  • You like to go off and explore the house, and dislike being contained for this reason. 
  • You are very curious about everything around you and spend a lot of your "playtime" finding new non-toys to play with. 
My dear little Luke, it's hard to imagine what our life would be like without you -- you are the perfect little piece that completes the puzzle of our family!

This Week's Menu + Weekly Bites

Hello, and happy Monday! I've got my act together again this week (yay!), so I'm here to share our dinner menu for this week and a few favorites from last week.

MONDAY - Skinny Pesto Chicken Bake with Roast Veggies

TUESDAY - Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

WEDNESDAY - BBQ Chicken Sandwiches with Coleslaw

We had the same chicken dish I talked about last week because it's just so good, easy and pretty healthy -- and like I said before, everyone in our family enjoys it, so I just make one thing for dinner instead of three separate dishes.

I also made, and then shared the recipe for, Italian Sausage Spaghetti Squash Boats last week too, and we loved them. These are so easy, healthy and perfect for fall.

And, if you follow me on Snapchat you probably saw that I also made our favorite Crunchy Caramel Apple Pie! I tried a little bit of a twist on the usual recipe by making a cinnamon roll inspired pie crust. It definitely added some extra sweetness and flavor to the pie!

It wasn't too hard to make either. I started with a pre-made pie crust brushed with melted butter (1), then I sprinkled it with cinnamon and sugar (2 & 3), rolled it back up into a tight roll (4), and then I sliced it into discs. You press each piece into the pie dish and flatten them out until there are not gaps. Not only was it delicious, but it looked really pretty too!
